The Effects of a Group Art Therapy on Communication and Intimacy of Multicultural Couples

Abstract
The more we have multicultural families in our society, the more frequently we see the families with problems. Art therapy is a useful method in developing marital couple¡¯s intimacy as they become able to communicate better with each other. Thus this study is to investigate whether the art therapy which is less dependent on language is effective on enhancing the marital communication and intimacy for multicultural family for multicultural couple, in which a foreign spouse can command Korean language incompetently. The group art therapy consists of six sessions in total. The subjects are six couples, in which Korean husbands are married to Vietnamese wives. To examine the effects of the program, the pre-test and post-test were taken using the Marital Communication Inventory of Bienvenu and the Intimacy Scale devised by Lee. The paired t-test were used to analyze the difference between the tests. The results are as follows: The spousal communication showed significant results only for the husbands. And intimacy in total and cognitional intimacy and emotional intimacy which are the sub domains of intimacy showed significant results for the husbands where as only cognitional intimacy is for the wives.
